On February 25, 2022, Rutgers’ Packaging Engineering Program hosted a virtual Packaging Jamboree, or Pack Jam, designed to inspire attendees to network, collaborate on, and consider the big topics in packaging today. This year’s theme was “The Packaging Industry and E-Commerce During the Coronavirus Pandemic.”

Hao Lin, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), has been appointed undergraduate director of the Packaging Engineering Program. After leading the program for more than 10 years, Professor Hae Chang Gea will continue serving as a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

The PMMI (Association for Packaging and Professing Technologies) Foundation and the Garvey Corporation have awarded School of Engineering sophomore packaging major Jesse Amponsah the 2020 Mark C. Garvey Scholarship.

The Annual Rutgers Packaging Engineering Career Fair was held virtually on October 21, 2020. We had 15 organizations join us. Thank you to the students and organizations for a successful event.

“Try to be as involved as you can: try to find your own community, space, or organization where you can be yourself and grow and develop as a person.” – Daniela Cruz Daniela Cruz is a junior from Bound Brook, New Jersey who is studying packaging engineering. She is gaining invaluable pre-professional experience in her field through a semester-long co-op. While her first was with Mondelēz International in New Jersey, she is currently completing her second co-op internship in California, working for Johnson & Johnson.

The Eighth Annual Rutgers Packaging Engineering Career and Fundraising Night was held on October 4, 2018. We had 27 companies present for our students to learn about the packaging industry and make great connections. We would like to especially thank Henry Renella of Estée Lauder for his keynote speech in sharing his experiences and giving our students professional advice that they will carry throughout their packaging careers.

Every year, the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF) holds an interactive, teleconference for undergraduate students who are pursuing their careers in packaging, graphic design, marketing & sales, business, engineering, supply chain and related students. This year, the  Careers in Corrugated Packaging Teleconference was held on Thursday, February 22, 2018. Speakers were followed by live questions from each of the campuses participating in the teleconference.

Rutgers Engineering students took the top three prizes at the Amazon Packathon! This year, the challenge focused on solutions to improve the customer experience and make retail packaging more suitable for the rising e-commerce industry. Student teams had 48 hours to develop a one-page summary and video pitch that addressed reducing damage and packaging waste, and improving the experience of opening and/or disposing of products. Eleven groups submitted solutions.
